7-Step Smart Guide to Cancer Prevention

Choose colorful and tasty plant foods
Eat more of a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes such as beans.
Increase your physical activity
Get moving! If you’re physically inactive, try to focus on these three things:
  • Add a total of 30 minutes of physical activity to your day
  • Subtract more and more TV time from your week
  • Replace your usual moderate activity with a more vigorous activity twice a week
Become a sun-safety lover
  • Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM.
  • Do not burn.
  • Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths.
  • Cover up with clothing and use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher
Limit red meats and avoid processed meats
To reduce your cancer risk, eat no more than 18 oz. (cooked weight) per week of red meats, like beef, pork and lamb, and avoid processed meat such as ham, bacon, salami, hot dogs and sausages. Choose tasty alternatives such as poultry (chicken and turkey) or seafood (such as salmon).
Avoid sugary drinks and limit alcoholic drinks
Choosing healthy foods and drinks instead of those that are high in refined carbohydrates and often in added sugar can help us avoid obesity and as a result reduce our cancer risk. And while modest amounts of alcohol may have a protective effect on coronary disease, research shows that alcohol may be linked to several cancers.
Aim to be a healthy weight throughout life
Experts agree that the best way to lose weight is to eat less and move more. Here are three steps recommended by the American Institute for Cancer Research:
  • Cut down on sugary drinks and reshape your meals to include a higher proportion of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans
  • Raise your physical activity level to help you lose weight and decrease stress
  • Cut back on oversized portions. Learn to visualize healthy portion sizes on your plate. For example, a 1 cup serving size of leafy greens is approximately the size of an average adult’s fist and a healthy, 3 oz. portion of meat, poultry or seafood looks like a deck of cards
Do not smoke or chew tobacco
Tobacco products of any kind increase your risk of cancer. Smoking, particularly of cigarettes, is by far the main contributor of lung cancer. Cigarette smoke contains over 60 known carcinogens.

An additional important step is protecting yourself financially and medically should you develop cancer. Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company provides affordable cancer insurance coverage, including benefits that:
